How to disinfect a mattress
A good night’s sleep is essential for our overall health and well-being. But did you know that your mattress could be home to various types of germs, bacteria, and allergens? If you want to maintain a healthy sleeping environment, it’s important to disinfect your mattress regularly.
Here, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of disinfecting your mattress effectively.
Strip the bed
Remove all the bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, comforters, and mattress protectors. Wash them in hot water and dry them on high heat to kill bacteria or germs.
Vacuum the mattress
Using your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachment, vacuum the entire mattress, paying special attention to the seams and crevices. This will help remove any dust, dirt, or debris that may have accumulated on the surface.
Spot-treat stains
If there are any stains on the mattress, spot-treat them with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Mix the two ingredients to form a paste, then apply it to the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, use a damp cloth to blot the area and remove the paste.
Disinfect the mattress
Now it’s time to disinfect the mattress. You can use a commercial disinfectant spray, or you can make your own by mixing equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the disinfectant over the entire surface of the mattress, paying special attention to the areas where your body comes into contact with the mattress the most. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Deodorize the mattress
To remove any lingering odours from the mattress, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface and let it sit for several hours. Then, use the vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda.
Air out the mattress
Finally, let the mattress air out for several hours before putting the bedding back on. This will allow any remaining moisture to evaporate; the fresh air will help remove any remaining odours.
Disinfecting your mattress is an essential part of maintaining a healthy sleeping environment. By following these simple steps, you can effectively remove germs, bacteria, and allergens from your mattress and enjoy a good night’s sleep in a clean and healthy bed.
